My wife had her "tubes tied" nine years ago after our last child was born. If we were to convert to the Catholic church how would we deal with this? Or how would the Church view this?

Some people do elect to have the surgery "reversed," but she would not be obligated to.

This would be forgiven when she confesses it in her first confession!

Would we be expected to refrain from future sexual relations since it would be an ongoing form of birth control?

i'm gonna take a huge stab and say no... hysterectomies also do not prevent couples from engaging in the marital debt

No, it was an act one time in the past. The result, no longer being blessed with children, is not an ongoing sin.

The Catechism section is very good.

http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/para/2399.htm

2399 The regulation of births represents one of the aspects of responsible fatherhood and motherhood. Legitimate intentions on the part of the spouses do not justify recourse to morally unacceptable means (for example, direct sterilization or contraception).

No. I know whereof I speak from personal experience, as do several of us on this board. :fyi:

Marital debt?

Comes from 1 Cor 7:3-5. The "debt" to which St. Paul refers is the marital embrace, which both husband and wife owe to one another.

Fulfilling the request for the marital debt would be wording it a bit better.

Husbands, your bodies are not your own - sound familiar?

You will find forgiveness, which you can scarcely imagine, in the Catholic Church.

A tubal ligation is not an "ongoing form of birth control"; it is sterilization which renders one incapable of conceiving a child. You can't control something which can never occur, in this case that something is birth.

23 years ago my wife had her tubes tied. At the time it seemed like the thing to do. We both agreed. Today, I deeply regret having encouraged her to do so. I pray God's forgiveness for having encouraged such a foolish and unnatural thing.
