Vegas Cane the air force sounds like a dream right now: just hope I wake up alive! Would I be more likely to be killed though since I'm in the air? Thanks for all of the replies. It seems really risky...which is one of the reason it's attractive i guess. I can't just live life without any spark in it. I couldn't be simple even if I tried. I just don't think I'm wired that way. Also- I have pretty bad vision and wear contacts all the time. Will they still want me?
Yes, I have horrible vision and wear glasses. There are tons of jobs in the Air Force. Not just flying. Pilots only make up a small percentage of the Air Force. These are some examples of different career fields:
-Intel (This is what I did.)
-Combat Targeting (This is specifically what I did. When I joined, Targeting was under Intel. They've since split into two different career fields. I positioned myself to get into a Combat Targeting flight. Loved it. No other career like it in the AF)
-Special Ops (Navy SEAL, Green Beret type stuff)
-Para-rescue (jump out of planes adn rescue downed pilots)
-Crew Chief (head up maintanance of aircraft. My dad ws this for 5 years. Got out and has been working for Pratt and Whitney every since with the skills he earned)
- Security Forces (Cop. Protect the base, apprehend people that break the law on base, etc.)
- Communications (work on information networks. I.T. technition basically)
-Weather (Forecast weather, brief pilots and base leasdership on the weather)
-Air Traffic Control
-Explosive Ordinance Disposal (Difuse bombs, un-exploded munitions. Very hard and dangerous. Ultimate adreneline junkie job)
-Linguist (learn foreign languages and translate enemy information captured)
So you can see...there is a borad scope of jobs. I've just scratched the surface there. If want more specifics PM me.
Every Job in the Military has the potential to be put in harms way. Just the nature of the job. Some jobs are deployed to support operations but they are not on the front lines. They are supporting from a forward base in a neutral country. Others are right there. Others go right into the teeth of the enemy.
As for a spark, take up hiking, mountaineering. Feels awesome to conquer a peak. I have southern Nevada's highest peak, 7th highest overall in the state, in my sights to climb within a year. I need to get in shape for the altitude by getting acclimated on some easy hikes when the snow melts out here. The peak is Mount Charleston, 11,918 feet above sea level. The hike starts at 7600. Over 4000 feet in elevation gain and 17 miles round trip. It's a rush when you're standing up there though. After that I want to go to Colorado and take on Mount Elbert, 2nd highest peak in the lower 48. My ultimate dream is to climb Denali, and I'd like to go to base camp of Everest and K2 and take pictures and say I saw it. Just going to base camp can kick your behind because of the altitude and the remoteness. That's as close to death as I want to get, lol. I'm not brave enough to try to ascent. I wish I was though because it would be unbelievable.
