"For Christ's sake, why isn't the tabernacle in the middle of the sanctuary?"

"For Christ's sake, why doesn't this bar have my favorite beer on tap?"

^ Are both, one, or neither of these expressions using the Lord's name in vain? It's my opinion that the first expression can be appropriate, if in fact the grievance is literally for Christ's sake. The second one, in my opinion (and I suspect most of the folks on this board) is inappropriate because something s trivial has nothing to do with the sake of Christ. A preference for alcohol is not worth using Jesus's name.

Yet, even with the first example, someone might misinterpret what you mean, so it might be a good idea if you are around unfamiliar company that isn't familiar with how you talk, to phrase your opinion differently. I dunno, it's like if I have a devotion to St. Peter, so I wear a necklace of an upside-down cross. My intention of the trinket is pious, but some may out of ignorance may erroneously think that the necklace is an expression of godlessness.

That make any sense? Anyone still care?

For what it is worth, I have had no interactions whatsoever with KnightsTemplar and other than his post in the "Sola Scriptura" thread I have not read his posts.

I find the use of these as epithets, when said out of habit, anger, derisiveness, or in a scathing manner to be offensive. And I hear them used quite a bit by customers at my job. I find it offensive when they do it too.

It is disrespectful of the One who created us, and gave us life.

I believe that use of Christ's or God's name is this manner is offensive although I try to understand that those saying it are just uneducated and for the most part are not trying to offend me or God. Another way I believe many of us take the name of the Lord our God in vain (Ex 20) is to claim to be Christ's and then when we act the opposite.
