Soooo....

For my birthday, my parents are potentially offering to get me an iPhone. I know zero about iPhones, except up until this point they have been too "fancy" and "expensive" for me. I've been getting by with *gasp* a phone that just calls and texts. No internet, no nothing. Also, I live in a cave.

So, now that I have this fancy, new job, I thought it may be beneficial for me to get an iPhone or some sort of smart phone. I have Verizon service, so I'm not sure what phones I am limited to, how that works, etc.

I will be doing some travel for my job, so I'm thinking a fancier phone might be helpful. It seems everyone in my office has some sort of smartphone that connects them when they are out and about.

So, here is what I would primarily use the phone for:

1. Calling people
2. Texting people
3. Checking in with e-mail
4. Calendar keeping (perhaps I can sync with my office Outlook calendar???)
5. GPS
6. Internet information browsing

I also have an iPad, so maybe there is something I can link or sync with?? I'm at least getting used to the iPad, so it seems like learning the iPhone would be less steep of a curve.

So... GO. Should I get one? Would it be helpful? What are the pros and cons? What fun stuff do you do on your phone?

First person to find and post a photo of a cat on an iPhone wins.

I have a tracfone. As far as I know, it doesn't do text messages. I can make and receive calls, but do so infrequently.

So, all that to say, I'm no help! :D

iCloud, I think. I don't have a second device so I'm not sure how iCloud works.

The question is do you want to be an individual, or just another mindless drone following whatever trends happen to be popular at the time?

We love ours and I'll tell you this.....

If we had to do it over, I wouldn't get one. You have to have the calling plan, texting plan and a data plan. Wayyyyyy to expensive!

Seriously, save a few $$$ and don't do it. Once they get you, you're done.

If you can afford the data plan I would highly recommend it. You'll be traveling for work and you can use it as a gps. You can Internet from anywhere, which means you can post here any time. The set up is almost exactly the same as the iPad. If you can use an iPad you can use an iPhone.

I have never regretted it. It all comes down to the price. You'll have to buy a data plan and a tet plan. I would assume you can get by on the lowest data plan.

I vote yes and I'd be happy to help you familiarize yourself, not that you'll need it. Plus handel on the law podcasts free anytime you want them.

Plus it's an iPod built-in. You'll love it.

I just did a search for "cat" in the app store and they have 3578 cat apps, of which 1458 are free.

That's another good thing: apps are cheap and there are many quality free apps. And developers always have app sales or make them free for a day. I've maybe spent $15 total on apps in 3 years. Most of mine are free, or we're on sale as free when I got them.

I only have it because I make a 480 mile drive to visit my daughter by myself, but I will make an occasional call on it. I add 60 minutes every 3 months to keep it active and have accumulated over 1100 minutes. I only turn it on when I need to use it, so no one can reach me on it unless it is planned ahead of time.

Check with your employer.
It's possible that they might reimburse you for some of the expenses if they want you to have access to email when you travel.

I will probably get a smartphone of some description, but I want it for the fun apps, no other reason really.
There is one you can point at the sky and it will name all the planets and stars and stuff and another then shows you where all the satellites are and what they are for, that kind of thing, could be a lot of fun.

My current phone is a brick and I love it, because when i drop it, it doesn't break.

I liked my Droid original, but I have to admit I did switch it for an iPhone 4S when upgrade time hit. It just works a little better in enough small ways that my aggravation level is lower, and Siri can be very helpful.
