I just started reading this, it's very interesting. I don't know a lot about SSPX or any Extreme Traditionalist groups. Personally I don't like a lot of the stuff some people do in the new Mass (liturgical dancing etc) and I am just now trying my best to understand and appreciate the Latin Mass but in no way do I think that the new Mass is invalid. Anyway just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this book and extreme traditionalist are.

This is a rather incendiary topic, here as much as anywhere else.

I haven't read the book. My opinion on it is that it is fine to be as extreme a traditionalist as you want provided you don't leave the Church or go running around dissenting from her teachings. There is much good in the traditional ways, but obviously you shouldn't let that lead you out of the Church.

Well I don't want to offend anyone but I don't think just because it's a touchy subject doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed. If we avoid this topic then we have to avoid like why protestantism is flawed.

I didn't say it shouldn't be discussed--just don't be surprised if you get heated answers (on both sides).

I got ya! But I'm prepared for that. After all this is a message board on religion.

Definition of an extreme traditionalist: turns up late, stands at the back and leave straight after communion. Normally a single male under 40.

I would like to hear both sides of the story on this. I mean how can a person who works on weekends only attend The Latin Mass? I mean I know where I live there are a lot of Catholic Churches but not many who do the old Mass and I work some weekends. So ,according to extreme Traditionalist, is it better for me to miss Mass altogether rather than go to the New Mass?

PS interesting article that's somewhat related to this topic:

Sadly, a devout Catholic man from my parish got caught up with an ultra-traditionalist group and he no longer goes to daily Mass or Sunday Mass at our parish. I don't know if it is SSPX, but he told some friends that he travels once a month, to another state, to go to Mass. He is also an avid reader of Father Nicholas Gruner.

Yeah my dad is a Deacon at a parish and one family from that town travels really far for a Latin Mass every Sunday.

Pete Vere was a member of the SSPX and is writing from his experience.

For what it's worth, I've never met anyone from the SSPX who thought the Pauline Mass was invalid.

I know some people with longer memories than I who say just that sort of thing about what SSPX said in the late 70's and early 80's. Can't remember if they STILL get the magazine from them or not, but I know they did get a publication from them for quite a while, at least.

I think that when people talk about ultra-trads which I think is the wrong name for them, they are mainly refering to those that simply deny the legitimate Papacies starting with John XXIII to the present. So in other words Sedevacantist who believe that Chair of Peter is empty and has been for more than 50 years.
