"Hailey's War" by Jodi Compton.
Weird book (heroine goes round with a book of Latin under her bed)...

Anyway, I think, the way the bible reads,
Jonah suffered from manic depression and probably felt suicidal.

One of my favorite books of the OT for the exact opposite reason that you suggest...

"I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice."

It has always been an inspiration to me when I have suffered from sins against hope. :cloud9:

As to having a Latin book under your bed; they are generally heavy volumes and good for throwing at cats. :fyi:

Desertfalcon,
The story continues with Jonah wanting a town nuked (trying to over rule God's decision).
One would have to suggest he has some pretty dark ways of thinking and had zero fear in
discussing these evil/bad thoughts with God.

This with sleeping a lot even when a boat is sinking suggests someone who was profoundly depressed
to the point of suicide.

Jonah suffered from manic depression and probably felt suicidal.

If you are a psychologist/psychiatrist it is probably not too clever to diagnose someone without ever having met them in the flesh. If you are not either of the above on what basis to do make a clinical diagnosis about someone you have not met in the flesh?

Jodi Compton's book is fiction.
We're discussing fiction.

In no way was that obvious from your two paragraphs.

Closet Catholic,
Are you telling me you really believe there was someone called Jonah who actually was eaten by a whale and lived? :)

Worse still, that God become incarnate in flesh and even rose from the grave after death! Freaky, isn't it?

No.

But I do believe he was swallowed by a large fish.

The objection that Jonah being swallowed by a 'great fish' and surviving three days is 'unrealistic' or whatnot is stupid, the event is not presented as a natural occurence, it's a MIRACLE.... the entire point of the story is that Jonah being swallowed and surviving was the work of God.

I don't really understand the objection to miracles, if one accepts the existence of God and accepts that God created the universe, then surely a miralce here and there is not a big deal. I mean, the one who created the entire universe can certainly create a fish that can swallow a man whole, and he can just as surely keep that man alive in the belly of that fish for as long as he likes...

I don't see how you can accept something BIG like the existence of God and his creation of the universe and then have a conniption over something much smaller, like the story of Jonah...

Great response, Doom.

I'm a devout Catholic - but among many Catholic I see this tendency to disbelieve in Biblical stories because they're too miraculous.
