No, that's not my position.

Clearly I could think that there have been some historic, contingent developments within the papacy that don't undermine the authority of the papacy.
If those quotes are saying what they appear to be saying then it would seem to be knocks against the fundamental purpose the papacy serves.

Why do you get so knee-jerky with questions like this? If it bothers you that much that I'm simply inquiring into the matter then pm me and tell me not to post them here. You're a mod.

Sorry about that.

It wasn't my intention initially.

Speaking frankly, I see a lot of your criticisms in this thread as attacks upon me personally, because Duffy is one of my favorite authors and I would say that in general I share his perspective. So when you say that he is bad and faithless or whatever, you saying the same about me.

Doom, my good man.... I'm still a somewhat new Catholic (2005'ish).
I'm still trying to make sense of it all.

Fair enough, it's a complicated issue, and I don't think that there are exact lines of demarcation of what is and is not allowed as far as the historical development of the Papacy.

Then you are being unduly sensitive, since p.falk is not even attacking Duffy personally. I'm not sure his posts in this thread can even be construed as "attacking" Duffy's views, and attacking a man's views is a far cry from attacking a man personally.

Anyway, when Duffy says things like this:

Quote:
Christianity established itself in Rome some time in the AD 40s. Historians are now by and large agreed that for the best part of the century that followed there was nothing and nobody in Rome who could properly be called a pope

it is an attack on the Papacy, unless he severely qualifies the statement.

Obi, I apologize for having this going on in two different threads (as you recommended against)...

but, if anyone is interested - I emailed Eamon Duffy and raised my concerns and here is what he replied with:
