Is it practical for a parishioner like me (I'm also a catechist, and would use it some in Confirmation Preparation - I usually have to teach classes very basic rubrics like to genuflect with your right knee down) to obtain a copy of the GIRM since I wouldn't get updates or USCCB specific instructions like a priest would? If it's practical, where would I get the GIRM? Is it online? If I do get a copy of the GIRM, how best to keep abreast of USCCB specific instructions, would a diocesan office do that for a parishioner?

Note: I don't tend to be scrupulous and dislike giving our priests a hard time about anything that's not grave matter (although I might vote with my feet if the Celebrant doesn't like to STBDTR), but I do like to know what's proper.

It helps to have a copy of the Missal when you're reading it. Neither one by itself is a complete guide (though I think most editions of the revised translation have the GIRM in front).

That makes sense, I just have an "Order of the Mass" as I find the many-ribboned missals and divine office kinda' annoying. I don't mind the format, but get lost with exceptions and then tend to shave my head, go native and quietly quote, "the horror, the horror." I used to lector, and wanted to practice the readings using the missal (as well as reading the readings of the day prior to mass) instead of the cumbersome lector books (I prefer the concreteness of books to online reading) but now I just use online stuff since I practiced the wrong readings one too many times (probably two or three times).
