GN has the softened sound given to those letters in French and Italian.
e.g. (French) agneau , signor , monsignor
The nearest English equivalent would be N followed by y.

"reg-nat" is the Classical pronunciation, and "re-nyat" Ecclesiastical (much like Italian language).
