That is very true. Today, any adult male is titled "Mister." In the 19th century, workingmen would not have been called "Mister". And, of course, when I was a young girl, it was rare for a "colored" man to ever be addressed as "Mister"

In Europe, we address a bishop as Monseigneur X.

Boys are addressed as "Master". They did address me when we traveled back to New York from Milan on a boat.

Also, (and teacher can correct me if this has change or is not American custom) a military chaplain can be referred to a Father N. or Rank N.

Chaplain N may also be used Of course to most of the troops, he's the "padre" regardless of faith group.

In correspondence, the proper USN method is:

Rank(abbreviation), Initial, Last Name, CHC(Chaplain Corps), USN (or USNR)

For example:

Adm. J. Ratzinger, CHC, USN

Pax Christi

I remember the first time I met our bishop, I was so nervous, I went to kiss his ring, and I yanked his hand up to my head instead of lowering my head to his hand. I'm still mad at myself about that. :x :x

Bishop Jenky is not one to be perturbed about such things.

c) Most Holy Father

The term Holy Father is only found one time in the entire Bible. It was when Jesus prayed before He and His disciples went to the garden of Gethsemane. He referred to God the Father as Holy Father. It is blasphemy to call a man by God's name
• John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
• Matthew 23:9 Jesus says, "Do not call anyone on earth your father, for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
___It is true that many of us men are fathers, but there is only one true Holy Father and that is God. No man on earth is worthy of that title, only God, for God alone is holy because God commits no sin. For a man to declare himself holy is dangerous___

Please use the proper forum for debate. That would be the Apologetics forum.

Someone answer me this: it's been bugging me for awhile.

Deacon is to Diaconate, as Cardinal is to ______.

Episcopate? That would be for all bishops, though, not just cardinals.

Your Grace, or Lord are used in British/Anglican countries only. They are NEVER used in the USA, as they are also titles of Nobility, and there is no nobility in the US. It would be considered to be a faux paux to call a Bishop "Your Grace" or to refer to him as, "My Lord Bishop" in this country.

In Great Britain, that is the normal form of address, as a Bishop is equal in rank to an Earl.

I have personally known several Bishop's, and 2 Cardinals, and except for very formal situations, most of them preferred to be called Bishop Bob, or Bishop Earl, rather than "Your Excellency". Even Robert Cardinal Mahoney preferred to be called "Bishop Robert", or "Cardinal Robert", and to close friends, "Bishop Bob", or just "Bob".

As the current Bishop of our Diocese says, he is first and foremost a priest, and that is how he wants people to relate to him.

Boy, was I ever having a "senior moment". It is Roger Cardinal Mahoney, not Robert. I've known him since he was a priest in the Diocese of Fresno, and I can't remember his name???

My mind was wandering, and i need to go locate it!

It is Roger Cardinal Mahony. No "e"

And I also know several bishops. Anyhow, this isn't the 1970's...time to recapture dignity and respect and not lazy familiarity
