That's probably right. Also, I didn't see Dream On or You Shook Me All Night Long on the list yet, so there's four of the top 7 right there.

Jethro Tull isn't there yet. Nor is Hendrix. (I went back and checked.) So there's two more of the top 7, I expect.

I just had Sabbath's Symptom of the Universe start playing in my head at full volume. Why doesn't that one ever show up on these lists? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4mDO4eGG9k (no rolls!) But there are so many Sabbath songs that belong, it's hard to pick just a few. Hole in the Sky. Snowblind. NIB. The Wizard. Iron Man. Fairies Wear Boots. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Sweet Leaf. Etc.

Was Hendrix on the list at all? I looked through it quickly. I'm sure there must have been some Hendrix. But I didn't notice it. I'd maybe go with All Along the Watchtower if I had to pick just one Hendrix tune. The main reason for that is that once you hear Hendrix's version, you know you never need to listen to the original again. And the original is Bob $%#$# Dylan.

Speaking of Dylan, having Like a Rolling Stone on the list is pretty predictable, but his best song is almost certainly Hard Rain's Gonna Fall. Or maybe Don't Think Twice, it's Alright. Both of those would be on my list. Don't tell me they're "folk" rather than "rock." I don't care.

'Symptom of the Universe' is a great song, and in fact I think that 'Sabotage' is an overlooked, underrated gem...

But this kind of countdown is really a countdown of 'top classic rock singles' or at the very least 'top classic rock songs that are commonly heard on the radio'....and 90% of Black Sabbath's stuff doesn't qualify by that standard.

Now, one thing I would like to see is 'Top 100 songs that were not singles and are never heard on the radio, but were made sometime between 1956-1980 by bands you may or may not have ever heard of'....would be interesting....that's something worth debating....

gherk, this list has only one song per artist...that is what makes it unique... so the beatles, zep, hendrix, stones , ac/dc, aerosmith and santana (all my guesses) will be forthcoming ... bagheera confirmed that pink floyd came in at #9 and thank you for confirming that paranoid might not be the best pick for sabbath's one and only entry...was hoping you would chime in on that one

we're still looking for one more to fill up the 8 remaining slots...you have a suggestion as to who should be there :wave

Ah, and the Stones, which Doom mentioned earlier. I caught onto this thread a bit slowly. Paint it, Black, should be in the top 7, too. So I finish the list thusly:

7. Jethro Tull, Aqualung
6. Jimi Hendrix, All Along the Watchtower
5. Aerosmith, Dream On
4. AC/DC, You Shook Me All Night Long
3. Grateful Dead, Sugar Magnolia
2. Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven
1. The Beatles, Hey Jude

These aren't necessarily my actual choices, just my predictions.

Edit. Oops. Lost track of myself there. I forgot that I needed the Stones. So I'll remove the Jethro Tull, although that's a surprise to me. How could Aqualung not be on a list like this? It's pretty popular, isn't it? New prediction:

7. Rolling Stones, Paint it, Black
6. Jimi Hendrix, All Along the Watchtower
5. Aerosmith, Dream On
4. AC/DC, You Shook Me All Night Long
3. Grateful Dead, Sugar Magnolia
2. Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven
1. The Beatles, Hey Jude

Yeah, sorry, I didn't read the explanation before I started spouting off. #8 is van Halen. :fyi:

My selections would be:

Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) for Hendrix and In My Life for the Beatles (going by the rule that the selections have to be songs that are widely known and commonly played on the radio)

I can see that. It's not so much that I expect the less well-known songs to actually show up. I was really just reporting that as soon as opened fs's link, that song started playing in my head. Like my subconscious was saying.....duh, here's what classic rock is all about.

oops..never mind...i see you have chosen jethro tull as your entry to make up the last of the top 8...you might be on to something

doom... they used to play 'nights in white satin'... they just haven't for a long long time... if they play any music from the 60s it is reserved for the super groups..the royalty of rock... with an occasional sleeper thrown in for a little variety ... maybe a steppenwolf or a joplin or a kinks or a buffalo springfield or a csny .... but it's primarily 70s and 80s that we hear on a regular basis :fyi:

If I were to pick any Ozzy era Black Sabbath song to put in a top 100 list it would be 'Sabbra Cadabra', although I will admit that it wasn't until I heard the cover of this song by Metallica that I realized what a great overlooked gem that song really is....

Here's another selection for top 10, (my choice, not my prediction)

(Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult

Now that I noticed I forgot the Stones I bumped them. But that may be out of piety. I guess I'd be more surprised if Jethro Tull gets left out than if the Dead get left out, since they're not exactly super common radio fodder, even when they're really straightforward and accessible like in Sugar Magnolia or Truckin. Also, though, it is really funny that there's no Santana. That's a surprising oversight.

And every top 10 list needs an out of left field 'what the hell are you thinking?' selection so mine is

'My Sharona' by The Knack

If you haven't heard it in a while it is easy to forget how much of a kick ass rocker this song is...and just how successful it was. When it was released in 1979 it was actually the fastest selling debut single since 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' by The Beatles in 1964...

And another selection 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkel

How many is that?

Wouldn't have been my choice, but it's not surprising to me.

as much as i like bridge over troubled water :cloud9: , i would choose sound of silence as my S&G choice.... but neither would make a classic rock top 100 list
