I like the old indestructible Nokias personally… but I do not think they exist anymore for purchase… Never experienced a smart phone… prefer a dumb phone myself. I thought the iPhones were pretty neat when my friends showed me theirs', but I have no need for such a thing. It can be super useful as a GPS, instant www access and all that. I guess it depends on it's usefulness or lack thereof for you...

I never had a need for any type of smart phone, which is why I've avoided it thus far. I have a very basic phone with minutes and unlimted texting. That's it. Even buying the texting plan was a luxury at the time.

My mom was going to buy me a GPS at first for my birthday. I needed a new one badly. But, since I wasn't working and traveling a lot, the need wasn't pressing. So I asked for one for my birthday. Then she was showing off her fancy new iPhone.... and I got to thinking. If it does half way decent GPS and I can check e-mail, why not just get that instead? My only increased cost would be the data plan. My current phone is up for trade in, as well.

Question on the data plans.... my husband and I both have phones. Do we each have to get a data plan, or can we share that plan?

Anyways, I'm going to tool around on my mom's phone and little more. Then probably make a decision. I'm thinking with the new job it will be very handy though. My out of office time and travel time will be increasing. If it functions as a GPS and an e-mail and internet seach device, I might just have to do it. The calendar and 'todo' list function would help keep less clutter in my purse.

$30 for both of you texting unlimited. Your data plan is going to be at least $30 and I don't believe you can share it. So you're paying $50 for non-phone services. However, if you're chatting with other people that have iphones, you can use imessage, which uses data rates and not texting. So you might be able to save on the texts.

One thing about the built-in maps app is that it will do gps for you, but it will not tell you when to turn verbally. You have to keep an eye on the map and turn when your little dot gets to the street, then tap the next arrow to get the next direction. Or you can have it in list form. It's been very accurate for me. But I believe there are other apps that will do voice.

Keep in mind, you can only use iMessage if the person you are texting also has an iPhone.

I have an iPhone & really like it. It has gps, and there are a bunch of free apps. I have the Confession one, and no, you don't go to Confession on it! You use it as an exam of conscience. Several Catholic apps, and some other. Like my bank, Weather Channel, etc. Lots of companies have free apps available. A;; that said, when renewal time comes, we're going with Straight Talk from WalMart. Can get net & text much more cheaply then ATT&T. Dh has a plain phone, no data pkg. and I have the data pkg. They are fun, though.
